Needing A Miracle

With wrinkled homework
and sack lunch
in hand,

late as usual,
i hurried down
our tree lined
driveway.

My heart racing,
I glanced up,
in a weak gesture
of piety,
hoping just this once

       God

would take my side.

the clouds

and then par ted.

high overhead
there was a sudden garish splash
of tumbling yellow,

       and

holding my breath,
arms outstretched,
I attempted
the
seemingly impossible
task of

catching the bus.
